Urpo has 13 years of experience of manufacturing, project management, structural strength analysis and research and development in machine shops of different sizes.
Urpo’s return to the nuclear industry after his master’s thesis began as a researcher for VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland serving nuclear companies and authorities among others. Urpo became a full-time worker in the nuclear industry at the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) where he worked for 11 years. At first, he worked on monitoring of structural strength of piping. Over time his focus moved over to safety classified cranes and handling devices for nuclear fuel, ensuring the safety of these devices over their full lifecycle. The work included inspections to design, structures and formation of regulations, culminating in the creation of regulatory guide YVL E.11.
